Festival Winternachten

Writers Unlimited boosts the social and cultural debate through language and literature in its Winternachten internatonal literature festival The Hague and its Writers Series. When the COVID-19 measures are relaxed, we glady invite our audiences back for the festival and the programmes in The Hague theaters, libraries and schools. Until then, we present online events and publications such as podcasts, filmed lectures and workshops.

The 26th Winternachten edition was an online, two-part 'slow festival'. First we presented from 13 to 17 January five, live streamed thematic programmes. During the second part, in March 2021, these programmes were available for free and on demand viewing, including extra's such as all commissioned, pre-recorded contributions by festival authors and young The Hague-based poets.

Winternachten 2021 about climate & imagination, feminism, peace of mind & solidarity, activism
The festival theme 'It's Up to Us' was explored by writers, poets, spoken word artists, performers and journalists from all over the world. Each festival programme approached this theme from a different angle. These angles were #BacktoEarth (climate and imagination), #TheFutureisFemale (feminism), #SoulCare (peace of mind and solidarity) and #StillWeRise (activism) developed and curated by our programme makers Meltem Halaceli, Gerlinda Heywegen, Fleur Jeras, Joëlle Koorneef, Nisrine Mbarki and Ilonka Reintjens.

The authors contributing to the Winternachten Festival 2021 were, among others: writer and spoken word-icon Salena Godden (UK, a.o. Mrs. Death Misses Death), South African poet and performer Koleka Putuma (a.o. Collective Amnesia), and writer Samanta Schweblin (Argentina/Germany, a.o. Little Eyes). Dutch-language authors participating included Arnon Grunberg, Simon(e) van Saarloos, Annemarie Estor, Vamba Sherif, Eva Meijer, Radna Fabias, Raoul de Jong and Jens Meijen.

Podcast: The Asterisk Conversations
The Winternachten programme angle #StillWeRise also lies at the foundations of The Asterisk Conversations, a series of Writers Unlimited podcasts by Simon(e) van Saarloos. In the first podcast Van Saarloos speaks with Jamaican-Canadian sf and fantasy author Nalo Hopkinson (US); to which writer and activist Tirsa With (Netherlands) responds by means of a lecture. In the second podcast Van Saarlos speaks with poet, performer, visual artist and teacher Pamela Sneed (USA), followed by a reaction to their conversation by poet Jolyn Phillips (South-Africa).
